I agree bro na limited if mag stick sa original design. Ang sakin lang, atleast preserve yung look ng isang kubo. But again, that's just me. Smile BTW there are several ways that I've seen from the competitors to preserve the orig design and implement new technologies.

Bro, no offense, pero alam ko na meron explanation ang mga kasali about their designs at meron mga judges, it's all written on the criteria.

Hehe..as I've said before, hindi ko gusto imply na hindi pwedeng baguhin yung design. I said "kung pwede, preserve yung legacy ng kubo". One way to do this IMO, you can change the materials but atleast find an alternative that resembles it or design a stronger material from the look of a steel bamboo for example hehe. Have you seen the movie, Jason X? I can say that even if Jason got an upgrade, I can still recognize it's him. Again, para sakin lang yun...no offence still. Smile

REMINDERS lang sa Competition:
Design Concept is not necessarily more on "Physical" it could be Functional,Expressionism,Structurally,Living things,Reasoning,Mathematically,Inspirations,Arts,Music,Love,Inventions,Peace,Design theory,Experience,Design Philosophy etc....but of course in relation to Bahay kubo as well,in short "INVISIBLE" in Concept transforming to Physical Form.
Maraming salamat po..... God Bless CGPINOY

Good point bro. actually, kailangan talaga yan. pro and sa akin naman, it could be on any form of preservation. hindi lang sa form. sa architecture kasi, madaming pwedeng mangyari. Just like the birds next of china. hindi naman sya birds nest talaga. pro dahil sa mga concepts behind. napabilib nila tayo na birds nest nga. something like that. Smile

Re: Competition #3: Bahay Kubo of the Future Design Competition

Post by v_wrangler on Sat May 16, 2009 11:18 am

If I'd have a chance to build my own bahay kubo of the future in 50 years (kung buhay pa ako noon!). It will be the same bahay kubo we have now. Because for me - that's what a bahay kubo is - no more no less.

But since this is a competition and I've been keeping a close eye on everyone's entry like vibrator to a fanatic. I cannot bare the itch anymore!

And I come

...to the conclusion that some people seem to get too excited easily they forget to read:

1. It has to be environment -friendly. No ifs no buts. It's the goddam rule mate! Google that and you'll have a few hits.

2. Don't add the techie windmill or the largest solar panel when you are using portland to construct the house, why? because the power you generate will only be used to cool down the heat generated by that stupid combo! Be creative and use a substitute that would stand the weather in our tropics!

3. Don't put your collected rainwater at ground level because you'd waste the generated power from your compost for pumping them up to the filter and up where they should go - the kitchen, toilet or the bathroom! Use the power of gravity (hint) and let them flow!

While there will be no other bahaykubo better than what we have now, we (including you entrants!) as designers can learn from its very basic concept:

Ventilation, Illumination (which in current language translate to energy conservation and savings)

Use of indigenous materials or biogradable materials - ask yourself whether there will be more cocunuts in the future, will there be farming space? Will people have more jobs, will the money of the future have more purchasing power? All these will translate to design because the lifestyle of the future will dictate how we live.

It has to be for the masses (well I lied) I mean - if you are able to do that, then you've done justice to the beauty of the bahay kubo because - it was built to be built by everyone, carried by everyone, afforded by everyone.

Case in point - the house I built in the outskirts of Sapporo is my bahay kubo of the current times. While it looks very modern Japanese in all angles, No triangular roofing - it has all the qualities of the bahay kubo I used to spend vacation during my younger days. While the roof looks boxy from the ground, the roofing is actually shaped like a funnel so that rainwater or melted ice can be collected in the middle rather than the typical four side collectors before being shuttled to the drain. ( I cannot afford the rainwater collection system)

For ventilation, we do not have concrete walls but instead wood panels that are insulated with cotton like fibers and biodgradable aluminum like material - so its warm during winter and cool during summers. Like your typical bahay kubo, flooring is raised about 50 cms above ground using concrete as a base (Imagine - this is the only concrete area!)

So that air can circulate even on the ground - there are slits or window like openings on all side of the concrete foundation. Close it during winter and open during summer.

For illumination, Big windows on the top walls to let the sun in . White walls to let it bounce around. For water conservation, the washing machines are equipped with mini pumps to suck water from the tub after a days dip. Toilet flush uses water collected after hand washing at the small sink in the toilet.

I don't have the nice farm view but I always feel like I'm in a nice modern bahay kubo having a vacation again!

Since you guys were gifted with the talent for design and construction - look at the bahay kubo as a concept and function and not just a package. Draw inspiration from its meaning. Form = Function.

Sabi ko nga sa isang thread - don't give the emperor siopao guisado when he asks for siopao asado!

Have a merry day!

And btw, don't give me the wait, for fun lang naman eh or it's the imagination thing Very Happy - if it defeats the purpose then your creation means nothing. zip. dekorasyon! And we won't vote for you Very Happy

And btw, for the winner, if you are Philippine -based. I'll treat you to a sumptous lunch you'll ever forget. I know a good place in some bahay kubo!

in my opinion, certain criteria has to be firm in formulating your designs - which what makes a bahay kubo A BAHAY KUBO:

1. naturally ventilated, yet
2. flexible to withstand tropical conditions, by using
3. indigenous materials

veer away from these and replace them with artificial methods even if your physical designs look like a bahay kubo i'd think that would be superficial and will lose its essence.
