How to criticize a work?! (A small discussion)

Post by bokkins on Wed Apr 21, 2010 11:27 pm

First topic message reminder :

Hi guys, I've been wanting to open this up dati pa. Gawin natin tong small discussion on how to properly criticize a work by colleagues to guide us into a better understanding of what we are doing.

Aside from the fact that we are super sensitive as artist, lalo na when it comes to our personal works. It is also important that we stress the points of improvement directly and objectively.

The goal of this thread is to develop a good sense of critic.

Below are some phrases or words that I personally do not like seeing in post: You may also share yours and suggests. Everybody is welcome to contribute.

3...

Ito naman ang mga suggestions ko on how to critic:
1. point out the mistakes
2. suggest solutions on how to improve them
3. explain why if you find anything odd
4. suggest references if you have time
5. go direct to the point
6. be objective
7. avoid unnecessary comments
8. avoid using local dialects for everyone to benefit from the discussions

Yung mga compliments naman, hayaan na muna natin, these are ego boosters which I have observed will help improve a persons mood. a happy mood means good everything. Smile

Yes Sir, that's the reality. Many newbies think that way. They are just too afraid to face the backlash from their honest comments which is so sad, very sad and that's bad.

You let that guy know that my statement wasn't made in spite; merely an observation. Let him know too that this positive attitude adds heaps to his personal growth. But I still don't feel his avatar; its like asking asking me to go mano y mano or sumthin... but that's just me; outspoken...

This is a nice discussion and should be read by newbies like me. And this is my opinion.

About naman duns sa mga criticism, I think ok lang yun as long as supported with facts and suggetions. At talagang may alam tayo. I think, basa muna tayo ng ibang articles regarding that matter para naman may konting background.

Just a an observation, tingin ko, ang gusto talagang mangyari ng mga members dito at syempre ng bumuo nito ay ang maging professional in our respectve fields.

I am learning a lot of things here so keep up the good work. Of course spread the knowledge not the virus (crab mentality).

I hope this thread will be a reminder to everyone.

Andaming angagaling ng reply. Sila din naman ang salarin...

Here's a mix of how to be a sensible crit and at kung paano maging isang artist wishing to be criticized:

Pag pangit o may mali - sabihin mo kung bakit pangit. Pero sabihin mo din kung paano papagandahin.

Don't overcoat your posts with the usual kiss my ass I kiss yours stuff. The more you shift away from the objective - you just make the person asking for crits bloat with hangin over his head and learn nothing at all.

Be straight, direct to the point and concise.

If you want to excel, raise your contentment bar above average. By doing so, you shift away from mediocrity and you become a master of your craft.

Good images are the standard to start with. There is no contentment in producing acceptable quality work because that is the norm. Your goal is to produce images that convince, images that tell a story, images that convey emotion. Images that would sell. Images that would make you stand out from the rest.

So papaano ka magiging excellent? Harinawa magigising ka pag dating na umaga, "Ay Oo nga, that crit make sense now, i'm glad I had an open mind.

Paalam. Ang init sa maynila, para kang tinutusta.

@cloud and vertex:

dapat lahat ng posts panay "ang ganda, galing, idol, lufet, posmore, keep it up" para walang away. para ang sagot na lang din ng poster eh "salamat, master ka rin idol, post ka rin". di ba utopian? walang pangit na render, lahat maganda, lahat master, we are going to be one big happy family.

best part is, this will save us a lot of water and tissue paper.

naalala ko lang bigla...

i think around 2 years ago...there was a particular instance here in our forums na related dito sa topic. may isa akong kapatid nating minessage, (you know who you are). BUT...BUT..., seeing his works now...man, i can say every work is a masterpiece. i don't know kung ung words ko na un ang isa sa mga nakatulong sa kanya, in a way, but nonetheless, i know it made an impact on him. He sent me a message back and apologized for the thread hijacking he did. Today im proud to say, he is one of the best and for that i salute you mate! and hell yeah, show us more ! .. just remember to keep your feet on the ground.

Sure ang sarap magka 8-core monster to AIDE you in your renders, pero do not limit yourself to obstacles. Find a WORKAROUND for cryin out loud. Yung mga masters noon josmio pentium-0 lang ata ang gamit walang vray on board lang ang video WALANG INTERNET to find sources & yet they produced beautiful works. 1gig memory sticks was science fiction...
Try to imagine how Michelangelo Buonarroti painted the sistine chapel...

As per sir corpsegrinders links; I'd say its precisely this asskissing & ego-propping that brought upon this inanity... Guess who stands to lose?...

...They are mostly better than you are, they are busy but they took time to share their knowledge. ...

I just like to make a correction here lest I be misunderstood again. Not all critic know what they talk about. I know a lot here who look big but sounds like crap...Some just talk like they know everything, yours truly included! What I am digging at - is that you do not need to have a master's degree in visualization to know and express the uncomfort when you see an image that does not "click".

Appreciation for beauty is inherent in us. And we know pangit when we see one. What stops us from saying so, is our tribal culture. We care for our ingroup. Ayaw makasakit ng damdamin which is originally a positive trait if put to good use. So there you go - if we want to help make someone learn, be truthful and show 'em which area sucks bigtime. If you are on the receiving end, listen and pick up the points laid unto you. They may be painful to the ears at first but I'm sure you'll eventually see the wisdom once you refrain from refusing what was supposed to be a gem for the hearts... and your brain as well!

I got the balls to say those embarassing and bragging words and you guys are there to help me realized
what i did was wrong..So THANK YOU SO MUCH mga sirs! You guys dont know how much I appreciated it.Until now.
Those are the times i realized a lot of things.
It was my ego made me do bad things. I apologized right away i realized what I said and what i did.
Those are the days that made my life so different right now. If it wasnt on that incident i wouldnt be
here where i am and im not gonna have enjoyable and promising career.Though i work really hard, but that made me saw
the bigger picture.
I can't say my works are great but at least it is acceptable now and im happy that somebody appreciated it. Masaya na ko dun,
but because of tight and tough competition,i need to learn more and more and more each day.And CGP and 3DP made
my learning process so easy.
Im not only after those praises but i really appreciated those honest and unbiased crit.
Im glad madami pa din dito sa site na ok mag crit and im so thankful for the effort exerted.
Lagi kong naiisip na theyre criticizing my work because they want me to
improve more. They want me to be somebody.Ayaw nila akong maging katawa tawa sa ibang lahi and definitely,,,,,
they want the BEST for me!Again thanks everyone!!!

BTT: Here 's my take on how to criticize a work.
Halos nasabi na ata lahat. And its good na lumalabas lahat ng mga yan.Im really happy to see the replies here.
Veterans did a very good job!hehehehe. At least I feel that if ever mabasa ng mga members theres a chance for them to realize how important crits is. I mean, honest crit.
Remember everyone that theres no perfect renders. no matter how long you spend time on it meron at merong sablay.
Thats natural. And i must say thats the best and fun part as well.!Failure makes you better and better. Crits are just Bonuses.

Re: How to criticize a work?! (A small discussion)

Post by Valiant on Tue May 04, 2010 7:52 am

He is not in any position to demand. He is at the mercy of the one giving the crits. If the crit find time to pay attention, it's something to be thankful about. If not, then one shouldn't feel anything negative at all.

One tip so that you get the attention you desire is to learn to use words that invite kind attention. In my dictionary these people are like leeches, they suck blood from you and leave you once the guts full. I for one put names on the ignore list. In the same way, if you find crits you do not like - simply disregard whatever they say. If they make sense and you disregard them - then its your loss. If they do not make sense and all they do is banter then you win by not losing your wits. Quits.

Isa pa, let us remember that its easier to psot than spend time making a screen capture, most of the time people we ask to provide one have day jobs and may not have the time to provide something to guide you like a capture of a screen setting. In the same way, the admins used to say that psoting in the forums is a privilege and not a right. Sa madalit salita, ang makareceive ng setting is an extraordinary privilege - not everyone get to receive one.

My last advice is to befriend those who seem better than you. If you treat them like enemies chances are - you will never ever get a piece of their brains.

Happy critiquing folks!

Eto pa masakit na napapansin ko sa iilang mga thread..They ask you for a lot of things and you answered them, meron pa ngang iba dyan e gagawa pa ng simple tutorials with screenshots for you to understand, but not a simple thanks they will receive.???Kahit acknowledgement na nabasa nila yung reply mo ok na yun,,..I understand na if you help somebody else dont expect anything in return...But please..Simple manners lang po sana.

i agree... to avoid confusion po... it means better to receive kick ass remarks than nothing at all?

it gives me an impression na kaya dumadami ung pacute na title is kasi nakaka-attract ng atensyon...

good point but then again... no one here is asking for a settings ng madalian ang pagpost... and yet dumaan ang araw, linggo, buwan and half of the year walang naipakita as promised... nagiging parang bragging lang tuloy ang nangyayari...

if i will do this... how i am gonna be different sa mga sinasabi mong leechers? it's not my character to be-friend anyone kasi meron akong gustong makuha or matutunan sa kanya...

it gives me an impression na kaya dumadami ung pacute na title is kasi nakaka-attract ng atensyon...
I only look at the latest post list and pick from titles that makes me understand the logic and the goals of the actual posts. If something interests me, I head to the thread and make my piece there. Same thing with titles that does not have anything to do with the post. I hate them sorry.

As I told you, it's like abuloy ng pulitiko. Pag natupad, palakpakan.

if i will do this... how i am gonna be different sa mga sinasabi mong leechers? it's not my character to be-friend anyone kasi meron akong gustong makuha or matutunan sa kanya...

Do you pay attention when your friend speaks to you? Do you listen with an open heart when your family members or a girlfriend or a boyfriend speaks to you. If the answer is yes then you've got the point of what I was meaning to say.

In the crit's point of view, its easier to share and expound on the ideas when you know that the other party is interested to learn. Whether you become real friends or not - it does not matter. But the vertexwrangler can become a good friend and mentor. A bad enemy if so desired.

Hope I was able to share some wisdom.
