HP Z800 would be best for 3dmax coz it's one of the Workstation na recomended ng Autodesk para sa kind ng work naten. I'm lucky my company bought 3pcs with 2-xenon 6 core (multi thread to 12) 12gb Ram and 1 Quadro FX na Graphics Card each Z800. As of now ngayon ko pa lang nasusubukan sa rendering.

Kung afford mo ung HP Z800 or Dell Precission Workstation go for it. Try to Max out ung configuration ng Z800 sa hp. http://h71016.www7.hp.com/dstore/MiddleFrame.asp?page=config&ProductLineId=433&FamilyId=3007&BaseId=30037&oi=E9CED&BEID=19701&SBLID=

@sir Dan. Tria... Kung mag Distributed rendering man lang there's no need for a quadro fx on both units, kung sa server pwede pa mag quadro.. In my opinion kasi kung mag DR setup you dont need much of the videocard from the other units yung kukunin lang doon ay yung buckets na e relay nila at mag dedepende ito sa lakas ng processor speed at ram.. for economical reasons atleast 1gb videocard will do from other units... For the server you can use quadro or tri SLI setup, and now for max 2012 you dont need much of a high end video card.. Correct me if im wrong opinion ko lang naman.. mahal nga lang talaga ang workstation ng hp at dell.. Pero I guess puwede naman ito tapatan ng custom setup, nakamahal lang kasi niyan is the quadro fx which you dont need in every unit...

but normal GPUs won't work, right sir Dan? Should it really be a Quadro for 3D Rendering?
