update! weeeh! Very Happy
hi CGPipz! (i like how that sounds! sana maging trend dito lol)
here's a creature art; concept, sketches, designs, wips, process and the final:
-ginawa ko toh for a creature design challenge..
topic + description: Xemeean Phoenix - Xeemia is a cold rocky world, perpetually covered in snow and ice. Large frozen seas cover sections of the planets southern hemisphere. It has no moons and was thought to be void of life until recently. Specific points of interest are in what the Xeemean Phoenix does upon waking from hibernation and its hunting habits.

first -here is my concept sketch for the creature + environment with overlay colors -just to get off with the mood and color theme. but. di ko masyado nagustohan ang result.

so. did some more sketches of my design just to take in its whole form, for possible movement/pose, and functions.

this is my final piece

---
note : boring basahin! Very Happy
creature concept description:
the xeemean phoenix inhabits the icy and rocky mountains of xeemia; often hanging on sides of cliffs and/or crawling in gaping cracks or in the deep crevices of cave ceilings. it has a fairly flat body which is very flexible that wiggles when moving; aided by hard spines covering particular parts of its body, depending on functions. its extra skins found extending from its legs to tail allows it to leap and glide on very short distances. the spines vary in sharpness and size; micro, found on its belly where it would lie it flat to grab on surfaces ~to large claw-like ones visible on each end of its legs, thus it lacks toes but serves almost the same purpose. this then enables it to crawl efficiently and silently rapid (even while upside-down) on ice, rocks, in thin cracks ~despite strong storms and blizzards.

a full grown phoenix can range from 20-27 ft. despite its large size, it weighs rather light; typical enough because the food it consumes are distributed more for its (70%) energy and less for (30%) body mass. it has a poor sense of smell, since the nostrils only functions are for breathing, and muscle contractions and the shell on its head makes it more difficult for smelling beyond normal. in contrast, it has a stereoscopic eyes, giving it sharp vision and depth perception. enabling it to see a prey from long distances.
the phoenix's tongue is its one of most distinctive features, used for catching and hunting preys, and sometimes for self-defense. it has a very long, elastic, extrudable tongue -which is a well-structured muscular suction cup covered with thick mucus-like substance, that is shot forward rapidly on a prey, firmly sticks to it and is quickly drawn back into the mouth, crushing it with its strong jaws before consuming it completely. the phoenix has no teeth but rather has a set of large blunt spines on the ridge of its mouth. its jaw has multiple joints allowing it to swallow prey even larger than its size. although its eats other land creatures, it prefers large fish-like animals that are often found swimming just below the mountain cliffs.

the xeemean phoenix does not have a many predator because of its size and the place it's living in. however, it is most vulnerable when hungry; climbing down the mountains to hunt may be its fatal chance as a prey for larger carnivorous creatures. if by chance it is seen, often because of its distinguishing barring on the back and its dark colored tail. its hissing sound echoing out can also be an indication that a phoenix is nearby.

it got its name 'phoenix' from; mainly of two reasons. one, because its first discoverers mistake the creature's dark skin pattern on its back -as a giant bird-like skeleton fossil, frozen-trap vertically in a cave's wall. since it has the ability to change color depending on its mood and the surrounding temperature; ranging from dark blue (normal), bluish-grey to almost white (low), so as using it as camouflage when burying itself in ice ~leaving the darkest barring only visible.
~and two, because of its nature of being active when hunting and goes back sleeping during food digestion.
the phoenix skin is made out of blubber-like build ups essential for the creature to survive extreme cold while active and while dormant. dormancy occurs for a long period of time that ice would slowly covers its body ~such as its choice of habitat are core areas of frozen mountains. but since the phoenix maintains a high body temperature for hunting and for a source of energy while dormant. thus, its gradual sweating also functions as a lubricant coating separating its body from ice, allowing the creature to break and shake out of the ice easily.

---

and here's the process. from grayscale to color. steps 6-7 wala maxado changes except for enhancements, effects and my sig ohoo..

~mejo proud din ako sa work natoh. nawalan kaseh ako ng inspiration til ginawa ko toh -which somehow motivated me to make more Smile
well. hope you all like it! critz and comments are extremely welcome -lalo na ang critz XD
