Ambient Occlusion with Vray Dirt Made Easy
Hi guys, Here's a simple step by step work flow on how to apply vraydirt as your ambient occlusion (AO).
1. Render raw object.

2. Create a vraymtl and then apply vray dirt on diffuse material slot.

vraydirt settings

3. Drag vraydirt material to your override material slot under global switches dialogue box.

4. Make sure to turn off your background and use a white color.

5. Render object with vray dirt material

In Photoshop
6. Copy and paste vraydirt render over raw render and blend it using multiply, adjust opacity to desired output.

7. And heres the final output.

Results may vary depending on your preffered output. Vraydirt will add depth to your renderings by adding dark areas on the corners and edges. Good luck and happy rendering.

Re: Ambient Occlusion with Vray Dirt Made Easy
Boks way is fine except that you don't need RAM to spend energies in lighting the scene, or raytracing. It can be turned off - what you need is a plain B&W dirt pass.
In short:
Standard Material with vraydirt as diffuse, self -illuminated,
Lights, reflections, turned off in the globals.
Mulitplied in PS or AF
Another way to do it in a single pass:
Use vray dirt as a mask to combine regular + darker versions of your diffuse maps OR put your maps directly in the occluded/unoclluded slots of vraydirt.
Vray dirt is like salt 'n pepper - you put too much and it end up too salty and hot (vray dirt looking like molds or unnatural airbrushed shades)
