How to make a thing transform?

Post by Alicecocoz on Tue Jan 13, 2009 8:31 pm

First topic message reminder :

Hello all,

I was just wondering if you have some sort of a tutorial that shows techniques on object transformations. im really not sure how it's done and im having hard time looking for tutorials on the net. Para kasing complicated masyado yung mga transformations sa movies like transformers..daming parts ewan kung saan napupunta..

MAYA po sana pero ok lang pag MAX basta makuha ko logic. TIA po sa lahat. Smile

rockgem wrote:i also found this good tutorial or rather project overview from 3dtotal.com of how a 3d artist tackled an autobot transforming into a car.

'Making of Autobot'

i also rigged a robot arm so its transformation or retracting is controlled by a slider and reaction manager under 3ds max like what I did on this project. --> Cryogen knife . unfortunately i spent more time on trying to get the rig work and because everything is controlled by 1 slider you also lose manual control of each pieces being transformed. it was a great rigging exercise but i don't think it was a practical approach.

Tnx bro. Actually I saw the video before but it did not tackle the best part which is transformation itself. Medyo naka focus sa modeling and texturing and to add gawa sa Max yung tutorial hehe..d masyado makarelate.

I saw your cryogen knife vid way back before and it looked great. I was thinking of implementing the same technique using sliders with the help of MEL scripting..kaya dapat lahat ng transformations parang pre animated lang and wala ka nga control..pero this would save me a lot of time since automated na yung transformation moving forward.

^ yeah he left out the best part of his animation in the dark and didn't show it in his tutorial but i think sir mushroom pretty much covered how it was done.

About the "automated" transformation, I would love to see your rig in maya with this concept sir. I'm not that much of a rigger in max but I do play heavily with wiring parameters and maybe I could learn from rig your as well and apply it on max. The thing with automation is that animators will lose detailed control on most of the objects when transforming, like secondary motion.

Re: How to make a thing transform?

Post by aparach on Thu Mar 05, 2009 11:30 am

hello guys im new here in CGpinoy Im from Mushroom Multimedia Company.. anyway heres the finish project of our Nissan GT-R

Ill give you some ideas for you to understand ..but first im not good in english so pasensya na.. anyway the tools you need in 3dsmax is just the select_and_link, move and rotate functions but first you have to slice your car into pieces.. that is the first complicated part in making this project.. and the last part in making this project is the animation of all pieces and imo there is no other shortcuts here..

1. prepare your modeled car (1 week process if you make your own car)

2. model a 3d robot (1 - 2 weeks process if you want a very detailed robot)

3. link the pieces of the robot like linking all the left forearm parts into one object (the parent object of the forearm part) then link that parent object to forearm biped .. (just use the Select and Link button)

4. merge the car and the robot into 1 scene. (be sure to save the file in number incrementally for each stage in the modelling)

5. reposition the biped in a fetal position inside the car. (be sure to enable the figure mode button to reposition the biped so that the car will not deform later because once you've linked the car's parents to the biped you have no chance to undo the car's parts original position when the biped is in human position)

6. slice the car into pieces..

7. link the car's parts into the object's parents - this part is really your choice as to where you would like to link the parts of the car to the robot.. (for example I'd prefer the front bumper as the breast part of the robot.. the doors, the forearms or shoulder (2 doors cars).. the windshield is at the back.. Rear bumper is the foot part. the roof as the forelegs or legs (you can use the back door for this part if you have a 4 door car) and etc....

8. the tricky part begins here.. start at frame 0... which is the car mode then hide all the object except the biped...

Car parts in car mode

9. animate the biped in human mode(standing position is better) at least 3 to 5 seconds animation

10. unhide all objects then hide the biped..

11. animate the robot parts until it is hidden inside the car... (I prefer at least 4 keyframes animation for every part of the robot for 3 to 5 seconds don't get lazy in this part even if the process becomes tedious and time consuming)

Robot parts in car mode

10. reverse the key frame animation by selecting all key frames of the robot parts....

11. hide all the objects except the car parts. since the biped has two animated positions(the fetal position which is the car mode and the standing position which is the robot mode) you can now go to the robot mode frames and start animating the car's parts until they are repositioned to the robot mode (again at least 4 key frames animation)

car parts in robot mode

12. and the final one .. Good Luck!

heres my animated version
