Music for the Fame and money or just for Fun?

Post by arkiedmund on Thu Apr 02, 2009 5:36 am

Ano mas pipiliin niyo, to play just for fun, or to play just to have money and become famous?

I'll reserve my answers later.

There's no money in music unless if you have the Pick Of Destiny! just kidding!
I only play music just for fun and I will only play music for my self, for my wife, and for my future kids, and to all the people who loves rock n roll.

Rock N Roll is for happy and extremely nice people like me. whehehe hippie

i used to play in a band too..... it was fun and if good money+fame comes with it then why not... pero based sa music scene natin mahirap kang ma sign if hindi mainstream ung genre ng music mo. Very Happy now i play for me na lang... thumbsup

natry ko na both. while you are young enjoy and have fun (oks lang kung puro play for fun, but make sure you get better as you go along). when you get better then its time you get paid (dahil sayang ang talent at investment pag ibang tao lang ang nakikinabang sa iyo). both have pitfalls one should be aware. playing for fun, you are prone to abuse--by the talent managers & promoters. playing for money, you need to suck up--like play the same lineup everyday.

for me since i have to balance passion with family, work and other interests i would like to play in moderation, that is - playing for fun while getting paid but not in a contained situation.

my band for 8 years.... when we started it out just for fun... name pa ng band namin is "The WallAces" puro cover songs... meaning we get along just to play for fun... then sudden breaks... palit ng myembro... jan pumapasok ung ibat ibang views sa music... for me i always go with the flow, the trend... during our 3rd year, our vocalist and i tried to come up with a composition.. original song... we collaborate parang john and george... kasama na un sa pagpapalit ng band name... that came in "The Beesides" puro orig lahat, our main influence is of course the beatles.. sunod na ung e-heads and rivermaya... we almost complete an entire album all compositions, then we play hard.. practice... and practice... til we get to decide to make money out of it.. its a band decision, so everybody happy... we tried to make an audition 1st @ Mayrics then got rejected afterwards.... shempre... malungkot... so practice ulit... then came in another drummer... my college friend... then change name ulit.. then ended up being "The Pencilcase" our (not-so-called) manager thought of that name... then gawa ulit ng demo pinalinis namin... kanya kanyang ambag para sa recording... sa flybox kame nagre record... sa tondo... pag aari ni Joey Budquin.. vocalist ng bandang SAGA dati... then it came out well... pasa namin sa Mayrics ulit... then fortunately di na kame pinatugtog ng live... pinakinggan na lang ung cd... then every month me gig sked na kame dun... and dun na nagsimulang kumita ang banda... den referrals na lang sa ibat ibang lugar... thats why maganda para sakin ang kumikita ka din.. kase nag eenjoy ka din naman habang tumutugtog... lalu na ung magagandang audiences na nakatunganga sayo... mejo napahaba ata sir arkied... wait ko ung sayo...

Back to topic:

I'd rather play for fun, than play for fame or money. Those things will just follow in due time. Mahirap kasi pag iniisip mo na dapat sumikat ka or magkapera ka, kasi, nalilimit mo ang sarili mo, specially if you are into creating original music. Ang resulta, nawawala ang sincerety minsan, at nagiging regimental ang tunog mo.

I'd rather be not super famous, but highly respected in the scene, than one who is famous, but is dissed by people in the rock music scene. Ang siste kasi, magsusubmit ng demo sa label, tapos, pipilitin ilabas yung musika, without resorting to paying their dues (gigging, becoming part of a legit music community, i.e., alternative scene, indie scene, punk scene, metal scene, building a decent fan base), tapos para makasigurado, babayaran ang label, malabas lang yung music. Syempre, yung mga matagal-tagal na sa scene, eh, napapakamot nalang sa ulo sabay "sino ba tong INSERT NAME OF BAND HERE, na biglang nasa number 1 na sa love radio? di naman natin nakitang nag gig to ah"...at ang resulta insults from different sides of the parties involved.

Ako kasi, I patronize a band na nababasa ko sa PULP magazine (ooppss, plugging na to), at syempre, mga nababasa ko sa forums, like sa philmusic..kasi once mapansin ka dun...at wala ka pang album, that means your band is probably creating something fresh and interesting. I usually try to check them out, lalo pag medyo malakas sila sa rock scene. And that is good marketing, make them impatient for an album, at once naglabas ka na, sigurado, madaming bibili nyan.

Kaya, i would rather follow the footsteps of sir chickoy pura, idol chad robles, or the late dondi ledesma...di sila famous at mayayaman, but highly respected in their respective music scenes, from the dawn, to rico blanco, to ely buendia, yan sila, tinitingala nila yung mga mentioned names na yan. Kasi, kahit di sila famous or even if they are not earning that much, they still persevered and kept the rock n roll flame burning, because of that undying passion for the music, and because they simply enjoyed the music.

@Muggz: ely is a very reserved person in real life.

Going back to the topic:

Mas masarap ang feeling pag ang iniisip mo lang, makatugtog ng maayos, at kung may financial reward man, yung tamang di ka pinilit na tugtugin yung ayaw mo para lang magkapera ka.

Mas the best pa rin, when you just play and have some fun, without thinking much about getting famous, or earning a record deal.

@ arkiedmund - just for the record... we've been thru ups and downs naman... we set ourselves to be famous in a way na lilingunin naman namin ung pinaggalingan namin... i saw how the band struggled... nanghihiram pa kami ng gamit makatugtog lang sa juan luna plaza mall... its just that ayaw na namin mangyari ung ganun... nung kumita na kami ng paunti unti, nakakabili na din kami ng sarili naming gamit... an old school red yamaha guitar for me and digitech rp2000 mulit-effects... with that, ang sarap din sa pakiramdam... btw, naging manager (manager nga ba?) din namin si "Ann Angala" the 1st manager of the E-heads, w/c means nakitaan daw (DAW) kame ng potential just like E-heads.. pero di din nag work out... kase marami na din hinahawakan na talents si mam Ann.... depende na din talaga sa reason kung pano mo iti-treat ang music for a band.. kung for fun nga ba or for money... kami kase nag set ng goal... ngapala... umalis ako sa banda... its been 3 years now..... miss them much.... Sad
