basically these effects is done on post production. Doing it directly in max might be cool but would most of the time not be efficient. If you do it in max, the effect will be embedded on the frame plates, so if ever the client would want to change or do away with the effect, it would be impossible to reverse the process...you would end up re-rendering the whole sequence again.

as for the defocusing, you will need the Zdepth render element of the same camera sequence. Its almost like doing a DOF effect in Photoshop, the only difference is that you are working on a animation. The process is almost the same in After Effects. If you can acquire After effects plugins like sapphire or Boris, you can make these effects more personalized.

You can even create Motion Blur in post production using the velocity channel. This is a lot harder to crack..I still can not properly nail the effect.

The velocity channel is still not production worthy but it works somehow with Realsmart. Without the plugins paul mentioned, you can use the lensblur in AfterEffects to treat the DOf with Zdepth. And when using zdepth - it is aliased so use a fog layer instead. You can move and adjust the focus plane by adding levels adjustment.

Nice updates mushroom!. I'd love to see some fake lens distortions there!

Paul - I will reply to your mail - I am just waiting for some confirmation as I do not have the answers right now.
