SIMPLE WORKFLOW FOR COMIC ILLUSTRATION

Post by marcelinoiii on Wed Sep 16, 2009 6:20 am

Hello cgpeeps! Here's a simple and quick workflow of mine for those interested in creating comic illustrations.

step#1: A fast sketch. this one's just a very rough sketch...

step#2: After pencils, trace it with pen and inks. You may do it with tracing papers if you have a good pencil illustration to preserve. This illustration was traced with the lines alone. We have reason why we only do the lineart. in comic illustration, this is usually done when you are the colorist yourself. for inkers, they usuall finish off their inking with shadings. In here, I did only the lines, which they also term as the lineart.

step#3: After lineart, we then scan and save to a hirez tif/bmp image at 300-600dpi for best quality. We open to our photoshop and adjust the levels and tone to make it crisp and we start filling in shaded parts which is supposed to be inked, but at least we save time and inks by doing this in photoshop bucket-fill.

step#4: We now color the illustration with flats as they term it and start putting tones like shades and highlights. (This tutorial is just to show a quick peek on workflow, later on I'll be providing step by step tuts of how to draw, ink and complete procedure of digital coloring...)

step#5: Background, pecial effects and filter add-ons...

That's it. At least I was able to share the basic workflow in doing comic illustration. Do expect for a more detailed tutorial next time. peace man
